Lautaro Martinez’s agent is unconcerned over the looming prospect of Mauro Icardi’s return for Inter Milan ahead of Sunday’s game against Lazio.
Since being stripped of the captaincy at Inter, Icardi hasn’t played for the club in nearly seven weeks as doubts over his future grew amid failed talks over a contract extension.
But Icardi made a welcome return to training on Tuesday and, therefore, could be in line to feature for the squad in this weekend’s clash with top-four rivals Lazio at the San Siro.
And news that the 26-year-old is available once more could not have been better timed given that Martinez sustained a thigh injury while on international duty for Argentina over the past week.
The 21-year-old forward has picked up most of Icardi’s slack in his absence up front, but is now set to miss Inter’s next two games as a result of his thigh problem.
On the other hand, though, Martinez was frequently benched in favour of Icardi and could now be reduced back to a similar role in light of his compatriot’s return.
But the youngster’s agent, Beto Yaque, is refusing to panic over the situation just yet.
“His future is with Inter and Argentina,” Yaque told Cittaceleste.
“I still can’t say when he’ll return, but we’ll meet tomorrow morning and certainly everything will be assessed in training over the next few days.
“It’ll be up to the coach to decide who plays, but I believe the two players [Lautaro and Icardi] can play together comfortably.
“His relationship with the coach has always been good, like it has been with his teammates.”
Martinez joined Inter last summer in a €22.7m deal from Argentine side Racing Club and has since scored nine goals in his 29 appearances this season.
Meanwhile, Inter will be looking to grab a victory over Lazio on Sunday to boost their hopes of a second consecutive top-four finish in the Serie A.
The Nerazzurri are third and six points above fifth-place AS Roma in the standings heading into the final 10 games.
