Sergio Aguero has clarified comments he made on the 2019 Ballon d’Or winner by insisting that “no one other than Lionel Messi will be my pick”.
Earlier this week, Aguero had allegedly remarked that the winner of this year’s prize should go to somebody in the Champions League final. Thus, either a player from Liverpool or Tottenham would win the award.
“I think someone should win it in the Champions League final,” Aguero had been quoted as.
But the Manchester City striker has now refuted those claims on social media by insisting Argentina team-mate Messi will always get his vote as long as he continues to play.
“I don’t enjoy having to clarify my statements – but when I’m quoted for things I haven’t said, it must be done,” Aguero wrote on Twitter.
“I’ll spell it out then. No one other than Messi will be my pick for the Balon d’Or as long as he keeps on playing – particularly if he plays like he did this season.
“The question put forward to me was whether I should win the award myself this year. My reply was that I should have reached the CL finals if I wished to deserve it. Couldn’t be clearer, and there shouldn’t have been room for misinterpretation.”
Despite Aguero’s backing for Messi, however, the Barcelona superstar was overlooked last year in favour of Real Madrid playmaker Luka Modric.
The Croatian’s standout displays in the Champions League and World Cup enabled him to end Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo’s decade-long dominance of the Ballon d’Or.
Although Messi is being hotly-tipped to win a record sixth Ballon d’Or this year following an incredible campaign at Camp Nou.
The Argentine has managed 48 goals and 22 assists in 48 appearances across all competitions for Barcelona this season.
