Ajax Amsterdam goalkeeper Andre Onana has admitted he made a calamitous error in the draw with Benfica but made some fine saves to preserve a point late on.

The Cameroon international has acknowledged he made a “really big mistake” in Ajax’s 1-1 draw with Benfica in Group E of the UEFA Champions League.

Onana gifted the Portuguese club an opener in the 29th minute of Wednesday night’s encounter in Lisbon, putting his team’s under pressure with an unnecessary Cruyff Turn before failing to deal with the resulting throw-in, enabling Jonas to tuck home.

However, with Dusan Tadic equalizing just after the hour for Ajax, Onana atoned for his mistake, pulling off two brilliant saves to deny Rafa Silva and Gabriel.

Onana insists he and his teammates were always confident of fighting back.

Luka Jovic – The Eintracht Frankfurt star striker

Luka Jovic is 21-year old Serbian striker and with his excellent performance in the Bundesliga is already linked to a big move to Barcelona.

“I made a really big mistake. I made the wrong choices, twice, which led to their goal,” Onana told, according to FourFourTwo.

“But as a goalkeeper, you just have to be strong and look forward.

“Even though it wasn’t our best game, I still thought we were better than Benfica.

“We kept the faith because we have great strikers so there was always believe that we could score.”
