Last season’s semi-finalists Ajax were eliminated from the Champions League in the group stages by struggling La Liga side Valencia.

Much was made about how good Ajax would be this season after losing both Matthijs de Ligt and Frenkie de Jong in the summer.

Today the footballing world got their answer, and apparently they not as good as last year, not by a long way.

The Dutch champions started out the night at the top of Group H. As long as they avoided defeat and or Chelsea lost, they were through.

Ajax dominated just about all aspects of the game but came up short in the end.

They were undone by a clever pass from Ferran Torres to set up Rodrigo, who hammered the ball home to give his side the lead and ultimately the win.

Ajax continued to push, with both Martinez and Ziyech forcing Valencia keeper Domenech into a couple of fine saves.

Ultimately they came up short.

It was a thrilling game, that was only marred by a moment of madness from Valencia’s Gabriel.

He appeared to headbutt Tadic in the final minute of the game, right in front of the referee.
