Donny van de Beek has confirmed Real Madrid’s interest in signing him from Ajax as the likelihood of a summer move for Paul Pogba deteriorates.
Van de Beek was one of the Ajax stars who helped play a decisive role in their memorable run to last season’s Champions League semi-finals.
The 22-year-old is one of many midfield talents to through the Ajax system like Clarence Seedorf and Christian Eriksen. His direct play, vision and passing skills have seen plenty of plaudits come his way.
Recently reports have linked Van de Beek with a €60m transfer to Real this summer. These claims come in light of the club’s struggles to sign Pogba from Manchester United.
“Of course I hear stuff like that from time to time. It’s always good to hear, right?” he told FOX Sports.
“But in fact, the situation is still the same, even though the media keep telling new stories.
“Of course there is interest, but people tend to go way too fast.”
The Spanish press have suggested Van de Beek will be Los Blancos’ Plan B should they fail to number one midfield target Pogba.
For the Dutchman, though, the priority lies with Ajax’s Eredivisie opener against Vitesse on Saturday evening.
“I haven’t heard it being said that way, but it could be,” replied Van de Beek, when asked about these rumours.
“You shouldn’t believe everything you read. There’s always a lot of nonsense. I don’t have to tell you what is true and what isn’t.
“I’m focusing on Saturday and the rest is up to you guys.”
Manchester City and Barcelona have also reportedly expressed an interest in Van de Beek recently. However, the midfielder does have a contract until 2022 and it’s likely Ajax will put up a fight to retain him.
The Dutch champions have already lost star duo Matthijs de Ligt and Frenkie de Jong to Juventus and Barcelona respectively.
