Ajax takes top spot in UEFA Champions League Group H after beating Lille 3-0.
Many wondered how good Ajax would be this season. They lost there two biggest players of last years team that was heralded as potential greats.
Frenkie de Jong had gone to Barcelona, and captain Matthijs de Ligt to Juventus.
After a laboured Champions League qualification, which saw Ajax struggle against lesser opposition, there was a question mark about their credentials.
The summer departures had had a bigger impact than anyone had ever considered.
Well if today’s game against French side Lille is anything to go by, we can put those thoughts to bed right now.
It only took the Dutch champions 18 minutes to open the scoring, with Quincy Promes heading the ball into the back of the net.
1-0 To Ajax.
Both sides had opportunities, with blocked shots and wayward attempt on goal.
Ajax took the slender lead in at the break.
Whatever Erik Ten Hag told his team at the half time got them fired back up again.
Within five minutes they had doubled their lead, with top left corner goal, scored from a tight angle shot from Edson Alvares. David Neres got the assist.
The Dutch champions started to apply the pressure as the game progressed, and in the 62nd minute, another header, this time from Nicolas Tagliafico made it 3-0.
While Ajax dominated possession, with 62% and had 15 shots. There will be cause for concern, that Lille even with far less possession managed 16 shots of their own.
But for some heroics from Onana and poor finishing from Lille things could have been different.
Ajax will be happy with their start to the 2019/20 Champions League campaign.
It remains to be seen if they can match the heroics of last year. But don’t write them off just yet.
