Arsenal legend Alan Smith believes they should have signed Gary Cahill before Chelsea did so in January 2012
Back then, Cahill had proven himself to a reliable performer in the Premier League at Bolton Wanderers and had no shortage of suitors.
But it was Chelsea who won the race for Cahill’s services in a reported £7m deal with the centre-back going on to enjoy a trophy-laden six years at Stamford Bridge.
Despite reports now linking the 33-year-old with a January transfer to Arsenal, Smith sees no reason why the club should sign him now.
“Arsenal should have signed Gary Cahill before he went to Chelsea,” Smith told Express Sport.
“He spoke and had a meeting with Arsene Wenger and it didn’t happen.
“But he went on to become a fine, fine defender.
“Now you’d be signing somebody who’s in his latter years and is not at his peak.
“I don’t see that as a goer.”
Cahil has managed 25 goals in 289 appearances for Chelsea and has won two Premier League titles, the FA Cup, League Cup, Champions League and Europa League.
The former England international replaced John Terry as the Blues’ captain in 2017, but is expected to leave next month.
