Alfredo Morelos could be playing for Real Madrid or some other elite European club if he was Brazilian or Argentinian, says Victor Montano.
Since joining Rangers from Finnish club HJK Helsinki in 2017 for a mere €1.20m fee, Morelos has tallied 77 goals and 30 assists in 138 games across all competitions.
The 24-year-old’s impressive performances in Glasgow led to call-up to the Colombian national team in 2018. He’s since featured seven times for Los Cafeteros.
Lille, on the other hand, are now reportedly eyeing up a move for Morelos. Reports state the French giants are in ‘intense negotiations’ with Rangers, who have already rejected an offer.
But Colombia teammate Montano believes Morelos’ talents deserve to be seen on the biggest stage, namely with clubs like Real Madrid or Barcelona.
“I respect very much what Alfredo Morelos has done in Rangers, but if that had been done by an Argentinian or a Brazilian, then teams like Real Madrid, Barcelona or Manchester United would be fighting for him,” he told the Daily Record.
“Without being disrespectful to Lille, who are a good team who will benefit his career if he moves there, as a Colombian, you will always have to take twice as long and work twice as hard to reach the elite clubs.
“Alfredo is a player who will guarantee you 20 goals a season. What team wouldn’t want that?
“Lille like signing up young players up as a protect. Their manager, Christophe Galtier, loves South American players and has a team that will be competing at the top in France.”
