Pep Guardiola’s former assistant Domenec Torrent believes that Lionel Messi could adapt his game to become Barcelona’s new Xavi.
It is only natural as a player gets older, they will lose a little speed. Even perhaps some of the key athletic attributes that made them who they were in their youth will slowly fade away.
However, the skills and footballing abilities that give them the magic spark that sets them apart from the norm on the football field will forever be there.
We see the footage today of legends such as Kaka, Ronaldinho, and Totti to name but few showcasing those skills still years after they have retired.
But there is a suggestion that he could adapt his game to replace arguably one of the greatest midfielders of all time, Xavi.
A man who knows both Xavi and Messi well from his days as Guardiola’s assistant at the Camp Nou insist that Messi is the ideal person to fill that void for Barcelona in years to come as he physical attributes change with age.
“He’s a very intelligent player. Often, he drops deep to receive the ball.”
“In a few years, he could play like Xavi if he wanted to.”
“He doesn’t lose the ball, he gives assists, he has taken care of his body throughout his career.”
“If he plays in a deeper position when he logically starts losing pace, he could play as a central midfielder.”
“On a day when he’s not sharp, he’s still the best. A poor game for Leo is two assists and a couple of moves leading to goals.”
Just how long could Lionel Messi play for if he adapted his game, and how many more records could he break during that time?
