Inter Milan secured second place in Serie A as they ran out two-nil winners courtesy of an assist and a goal from Ashley Young.
The race for the Serie A title was over a couple of games ago. However, the battle to secure the runners up spot, or “first losers” spot as put by Antonio Conte was still on.
Second-placed Inter took on third-placed Atalanta. The winner would be guaranteed the runners up position to champions Juventus.
Despite Inter boss Conte playing down the significance of being the “first loser” as he put it, his side wanted to go out in style. The next step from here was Europa League action for Inter and a win was all about building confidence.
To all intents and purposes, the game was over inside the first 20 minutes.
Just one minute in and Ashley Young whipped in a great cross for D’Ambrosio to head home and give the visitors the lead.
Then in the 20th minute Young got one for himself.
The former United man went on a run reminiscent of the Ashley Young of tens years ago. The 35-year-old ran onto a through ball from Gagliardini.
As he picks up the pass, he cuts inside from the left, with acres of space he heads towards the box. Young decides to have a go from distance. He hits an absolute peach of a curler. The ball whips around Sportiello in the Atlanta goal and nestles into the bottom corner of the goal.
Inter could have had a third in the final minutes when Alexis Sanchez’s effort was ruled out for offside.
