Much of the debate about this current squad and those who are missing, is because of those that have got in.
Southgate has shown a willingness to avoid favouritism in his selections but seems to have stuck by what he knows in this group.
Fabian Delph has done little for Manchester City this season, while Ross Barkley has hardly set the world alight with Chelsea either. Jesse Lingard is another debatable selection, as is Kieran Trippier.
None would have debated those players missing out, there are better players available than them. Hopefully, this is not a sign that Southgate has fallen into the trap of picking his favourites.
