Antoine Griezmann warned that France must prepare well for Monday’s “important” showdown with Turkey after beating Iceland 1-0 in a Euro 2020 qualifier.
Griezmann delivered another energetic performance for France and won the decisive penalty, which Olivier Giroud scored to seal a 1-0 win at Iceland in a Euro 2020 qualifier. However, the Barcelona forward’s concern lies with Turkey.
In their last meeting back in June, Senol Gunes’ side handed the world champions a shock 2-0 defeat in Konya. It gave them the lead in Group H, which they retained on Friday through a narrow 1-0 win over Albania.
But France can snatch top spot back on Monday by claiming all three points at the Stade de France on Monday.
“We’ve got an important match at home now,” Griezmann told TF1.
“We suffered over there [in Turkey], so we’ll need to prepare well for this match.”
Although the Iceland win wasn’t exactly the perfect warm-up, with France having struggled to breakdown the hosts’ stubborn defence.
Griezmann added: “It was very difficult, a really hard match.
“We needed to take the three points and now we have an important game coming up at home.”
Les Bleus boss Didier Deschamps, meanwhile, praised the commitment of his players after overcoming a tricky time in Reykjavik.
“Firstly that’s a victory here, it wasn’t easy. We had the chance to get a second, they’ve been good on set-pieces,” Deschamps told TF1.
“That was a man’s match, there was commitment, we’ve responded by having a lot of the ball. We could have made it more comfortable by putting away the chances in the end. It’s a good victory ahead of Monday’s match.”
But Deschamps couldn’t confirm whether N’Golo Kante, who withdrew from the match due to a knock, would be available for the Turkey game.
France are currently level on 18 points with Turkey at the top of Group H, with Iceland sitting six points behind in third.
