The ex-Giallorossi footballer believes the Sassuolo coach can be the best choice for the vacant spot at Roma.
Eusebio Di Francesco started the 2018-2019 Italian Lega Serie A season with Roma.
But he didn’t finish it, as he was fired and Claudio Ranieri was hired instead.
And Ranieri’s contract has run out as caretaker, and once again the coaching spot is open in Roma.
Which is why former Roma Alberto Aquilani hopes Sassuolo’s coach Roberto De Zerbi might replace Ranieri.
Sassuolo ended up in the 11th position of the Serie A table with 43 points. The team won nine matches, drew 16 times, and lost in 13 occasions.
“I really appreciate De Zerbi and his style of football. I even went to watch him in training at Sassuolo this season,” former Roma midfielder Aquilani was quoted by Football Italia.
“The type of approach he is proposing really inspires me.”
He explained: “It would be an exciting choice, looking to a young coach with fresh ideas.”
“Roma needs to make a choice and I don’t see any really impressive names out there who are available.”
“I do know Fonseca because he was at Sporting Braga when I was playing for Sporting Lisbon,” he added.
“Portuguese coaches are all tactically smart and well-prepared, so I think their football is often underestimated.”
“His Shakhtar Donetsk play entertaining football, but he doesn’t speak Italian or know the culture, so perhaps De Zerbi would be a better choice,” he concluded.
