Former Arsenal defender Nigel Winterburn believes the manager must sign the right players and avoid desperate second rate alternatives like David Luiz.
Unai Emery and Arsenal spent big this past summer. But the Gunners squad still remains short in certain areas.
The problem is that it remains to be seen just how much money is available for new boss Mikel Arteta.
Emery made it clear from the start of the summer transfer window he needs a top-class center-back.
It was a leaky defense that ultimately cost the former Sevilla and PSG man his job at the Emirates Stadium.
Arteta has revived Arsenal’s fortunes somewhat, but there are still defensive frailties that need to be addressed.
Winterburn talking to Gambling.com doesn’t want any more third rate signings, but the manager and the club to bring in the very best of what is needed.
“What money has he got to spend?”
“Can he get the right players in January?”
“It can be very, very difficult in such a short window.”
“They’ve been linked with a lot of players over the course of the last year and center-half is still a priority.”
“I think it was obvious that David Luiz was never Arsenal’s first-choice transfer target last summer.”
“Luiz at the last minute, suggests he was a Plan B or C.”
“My feeling is that Arsenal shouldn’t bother with another short-term fix, they’ve got to use their money more wisely.”
Arsenal has been linked with the likes of Dayot Upamecano and Kalidou Koulibaly.
But the truth of the matter is, money is likely scarce after the summer and they will have to settle for another less expensive option.
