After much encouragement from Arsene Wenger, the UEFA finally lifted the player registration ruling for their competitions for next season – much to the frustration of the Arsenal fans
This development comes in light of their record January signing Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who previously represented Borussia Dortmund in this season’s Champions League at the group stages, being cup-tied for their Europa League campaign.
As Dortmund were demoted to the Europa league upon their group stage eliminated, Aubameyang was prohibited from playing for Arsenal in the competition. This caused much frustration for Wenger, who has publicly criticized the UEFA for their handling of the situation.
Upon releasing new regulations, that will include a 4th substitute for the respective finals of the Champions League and Europa League, the UEFA also stated that from next season three players who are signed during the January transfer window will be able to play in the knockout rounds of both the Champions League and the Europa League, without exception – Essentially meaning that Aubameyang remains cup-tied for the rest of their campaign.
The fans have let their frustrations over the ruling know:
Had to be done the year after Arsenal sign a cup-tied Aubameyang while Giroud and Alexis could play in the Champions League…
Thanks, UEFA. https://t.co/sTOMDLuqaR
