Under-fire defender Chris Smalling is now of interest to Arsene Wenger, as he looks to reinforce the backline following a disappointing season for the Gunners
As reported on the Sunday Star, Wenger has begun looking at options to replace Per Mertesacker. At 33 years of age, it is thought that the German may be looking to retire soon from football and Wenger believes that Smalling would be a suitable replacement.
The 28 year-old has come under criticism from Jose Mourinho for his performances this season for United and it is believed that Manchester United would be willing to part ways with the England international for a £25m transfer fee.
Jonny Evans was believed to have been a target for both Arsenal and Manchester City during the January transfer window. However, City ultimately signed Aymeric Laporte from Athletic Bilbao for a club record fee of £57m and Arsenal decided against signing the former West Brom skipper.
