Arsenal have enquired Barcelona over the wantaway defender Samuel Umtiti, as Mikel Arteta plots a summer swoop for the French centre-back.
The 2019/20 season has been an utterly disappointing one for Arsenal, especially in terms of silly defensive mistakes and comic goals Arteta’s men have conceded this term.
David Luiz, Shkodran Mustafi, Rob Holding, and Sead Kolasinac have all struggled for consistency, and it’s fair to say all are prone to making blunders.
Therefore, Arteta wants to make sure to have at least one reliable defender at his disposal able to perform at the highest level, week in, week out.
Although Samuel Umtiti’s recent fortunes at Barcelona speak against this backdrop, the former Lyon man would certainly be an upgrade to the aforementioned quartet.
According to Sports Witness, Arsenal have sounded out Barcelona for the 26-year-old, trying to understand the availability of the Frenchman.
Umtiti has been continuously plagued by injuries over the past few seasons, which resulted in Clement Lenglet taking his place in Barca’s starting XI.
The Catalan giants are ready to offload their back-up centre-back outright.
However, in a lack of suitors willing to splurge money on an injury-prone player, the Spanish powerhouse will consider a loan with an option to buy.
