Cedric Soares could become Arteta’s second signing after Arsenal appear to be closing in on a move to sign the Southampton man.

Southampton right-back Cedric Soares is on the verge of making a switch to Arsenal.

The Gunners have already completed a deal for Flamengo centre-back Pablo Mari. The centre-back joined on loan for the rest of the season, with an option to buy in the summer transfer window.

The Spaniard is set to be joined at the Emirates Stadium by Southampton right-back Cedric Soares.

A Portugal international with plenty of experience in the Premier League, the 28-year-old is out of contract at St Mary’s at the end of the season and could be available for around £5m.

Reports suggested initially that Arsenal would be signing him on a permanent basis. However, it would now appear Soares is set to arrive on loan with the Gunners covering his wages and paying the Saints a fee.

This deal looks imminent as Southampton have moved to sign a replacement for Soares.

Via the club’s official website it’s been confirmed that Kyle Walker-Peters has joined the Saints on loan for the remainder of the season.

A statement reads: “Southampton Football Club is delighted to announce it has completed the loan signing of highly-rated young full-back Kyle Walker-Peters.

“The 22-year-old, who can play on either side of defence, has joined Saints from Tottenham Hotspur for the remainder of the season, providing additional strength to Ralph Hasenhuttl’s squad for the final months of the campaign.”

Soares would add proper depth to the Arsenal defence as Arteta looks to have lots of options moving into the latter stages of the season.

His move could see Maitland-Niles struggle for frequent game-time after enjoying a series of appearances following Bellerin’s injury.

Arsenal are still expected to be involved in more transfer activity before the window closes.
