Mesut Ozil has revealed the real reason behind his extravagant new blonde haircut, which has grabbed more headlines than even his own Arsenal future.
Ozil hasn’t shied away from the headlines this summer after the controversial Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan acted as his best man while he married Amine Gulse last month.
The German playmaker’s future has been another regular topic on the papers, with Turkish giants Fenerbahce having to recently deny they’ve struck an agreement to sign him.
Despite the constant rumours linking him with an Arsenal exit, though, Ozil remains on the club’s books and travelled with the squad for their pre-season tour in the United States.
But there’s been a noticeable change to Ozil’s appearance this summer in his new blonde hairdo, which has certainly kept the German star in the headlines over the past week.
And now the 30-year-old has revealed he had to dye his blonde after losing a crossbar challenge.
“We had a bet – it was me, Sead [Kolasinac], [Shkodran] Mustafi and [Alexandre] Lacazette,” Ozil told Arsenal.com.
“It was the crossbar challenge and, at the end of the day, me, Musti and Seo lost. Laca was the winner, so now you see I changed my hair.”
On why fellow losers Kolasinac and Mustafi didn’t go blonde as well, Ozil replied: “They wanted to try this colour as well, but Sead’s hair was too dark, so I think the colour was more of a green.
“Musti was looking at blonde and blue, but he doesn’t really like it, so he changed it again.
“I’m not sure [if I’ll keep it], so let’s see when I’m back in London if I still like this hair colour. If I like it, I’ll keep it.”
Ozil delivered an impressive performance during Arsenal’s 2-1 win over Bayern Munich on Thursday for the International Champions Cup (ICC) opener.
The Gunners will next take on Fiorentina on Sunday in North Carolina for their second ICC fixture.
