Arsenal Legend Martin Keown believes Mikel Arteta can use his experience of developing Raheem Sterling to help improve Gabriel Martinelli.

Mikel Arteta worked with Raheem Sterling in his previous job at Manchester City. Keown thinks that he could use that experience to help develop Arsenal’s Martinelli.

Sterling arrived at Manchester City from Liverpool with plenty of potential. But he was still a little rough around the edges. Arteta was a huge part f the City setup that saw that prodigious talent full fill his potential

Speaking to BT Sport Keown thinks that Arteta is the ideal person to do the same thing now with Martinelli.

Martinelli has proved to be a fantastic talent at Arsenal this season, bagging ten goals already. However, at only 18-years-of age, there is still plenty of room for improvement.

Keown said:

“The last player Arteta will have worked within that position would have been Sterling and you saw the improvement of Sterling.”

“So it’s going to be a joy to watch this fella improve because of his starting position.”

“This is where he is now rather than the bottom rung, 18 years of age.”

“I just feel that this player is so mature for someone so young.”

“He’s 18 years of age and we mustn’t forget that.”

“If you look at his vision. Everything he’s linking really well, taking on board this new message of give-and-go.”

Statistically, Martinelli looks like he is on the right path to even surpass sterling.
