Mikel Arteta has warned against putting too much pressure to perform on Willian Saliba as it will only hinder his development process.
Arsenal completed the signing of William Saliba from Saint-Etienne last summer for a fee of around €30 million (£27m).
A then 18-year old Saliba was then immediately sent back on loan to Saint-Etienne to complete the 2019/20 season.
The Gunners’ back-line has been quite shaky this term. The Frenchman’s signing, hence, was cherished by the fans with the hope that he will immediately upgrade the team’s defense upon his arrival.
It is also the general consensus among the fans that he can become and remain a bedrock in defense for Mikel Arteta’s side for years to come.
Arteta, however, has issued a warning to the fans to keep their expectations in check ahead of Saliba’s debut Premier League season.
“I’ve spoken with him a few times. He’s been around here a few times as well. We’ve been following him this season,” said Arteta in a press conference [via Football London].
“I know how high the expectations are on him for next year. But we have to bear in mind the age that he’s at and what he’s done in the past and make sure we create the right environment for him so he can keep growing as a player.”
