A late hammer blow by Gian Piero Gasperini’s men saw the Serie A holders suffer defeat in the absence of star man Cristiano Ronaldo.
Atalanta climbed up to the third place in the Serie A standings after a hard-fought 1-0 win over Juventus on Sunday.
It appeared as if the match was heading towards a goalless draw with the scoreline unaltered and less than five minutes of normal time remaining.
Ruslan Malinovskiy came off the bench and turned hero for La Dea with a decisive strike at the 87-minute mark. The ball reached Malinovskiy after a quick corner, he cut inside and fired a shot from the edge of the box. The shot took a deflection off Alex Sandro before finding its way into the back of the net.
Only a single point separated the two teams before the tie, and now that gap has been doubled. The result puts the host firmly on course to secure Champions League qualification. The visitors currently occupy fourth place and have a three-point cushion over fifth-placed Napoli, who have a game in hand over Juventus.
