Atlanta United’s record goalscorer Josef Martinez suffered a torn ACL in the MLS season opener.
Josef Martinez was stretchered off during Atlanta United’s victory over Nashville SC.
The Venezuelan international was the 2018 MVP. Since he arrived in the USA, he has scored 82 goals in 92 games for Atlanta.
It was the opening game of the 2020 season in the MLS for United and while the score was positive the news on Martinez’s injury is not.
Atlanta ran out 2-1 winners over Nashville, but an ugly challenge from behind saw Martinez hit the deck and leave the field on a stretcher.
The club has since confirmed via its official website atlutd.com the severity of the injury to the player’s right knee.
The statement read:
“Atlanta United announced today that forward Josef Martinez suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his right knee during Saturday’s match against Nashville SC.”
“Martinez will undergo surgery on a date to be determined to begin the rehabilitation process.”
