Atlanta United have announced the appointment of former Inter Milan manager Frank de Boer as new head coach on a multi-year deal.

Frank de Boer will replace Tata Martino as the club’s head coach after the Argentine boss led the MLS club to their first cup victory this month.

Martino had declined to sign a new contract after the 2018 MLS season and could likely take the Mexico national team job, as speculated by newspapers.

Since losing his job at Crystal Palace in September 2017, de Boer has been out of management and will take charge as Atlanta United new head coach on January 1, 2019.

A statement on the club’s website read: “Atlanta United today announced it has agreed a multiyear contract with Frank de Boer to become the club’s next head coach.

“A legendary Dutch player and coach, de Boer began his managerial career at Ajax, where he won a club-record four consecutive Eredivisie titles.

“De Boer also had an illustrious playing career, spending more than 15 combined seasons at Ajax and FC Barcelona. De Boer will be formally introduced to the media before the start of the 2019 season.”
