New Borussia Dortmund signing Axel Witsel has claimed that their Bundesliga rivals Bayern Munich had tried to sign him in 2017
The 29-year-old midfielder chose to end his 18-month association with Chinese Super League side Tianjin Quanjian in favour of a return to Europe with Dortmund following his impressive displays at the World Cup for Belgium.
But now Witsel has revealed that he could have arrived at Germany a year ago due to Carlo Ancelotti’s strong interest to sign him for Bayern.
However, despite the Italian’s best efforts, Tianjin Quanjian would not entertain the idea of selling Witsel.
“They did not call me but my former coach Fabio Cannavaro, and he then kindly and politely told Ancelotti that it was not possible”, Witsel told Bild, via Goal.
While he played a key role in helping Belgium finish the World Cup in third-place this summer, the former Benfica midfielder admits that it may take him time to readapt following his break from football.
“I feel good, I have been training intensively during my holidays and I have been resting for three weeks, but that is not for me,” he said.
“Of course I’ll need one or two games before hoping to be 100 per cent.”
