Ballon d’Or was between Lewandowski, Messi, and Ronaldo

Despite thinking it was the right idea to cancel the Ballon d’Or, Rivaldo feels it was Robert Lewandowski’s best chance to win the award.

The announcement that there would be no 2020 Ballon d’Or winner would have been a bitter blow to many, but perhaps no one player more than Robert Lewandowski.

The Polish international has been in scintillating form this season, and perhaps most notable in a year that has seen Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi far from their usual best.

The Bayern Munich forward has bagged 51 goals in 43 games this season for the Bavarian giants and threatens to add more as they are one of the favorites to win the Champions League.

His goals have already helped his side win the Bundesliga and the German Cup domestically this season.

Messi has 30 goals and Ronaldo has 34, both having played 42 games. Like Lewandowski, they too are still in the Champions League.

Social media feel that Lewan”goal”ski was robbed.

The 1999 winner, Brazil and Barcelona legend Rivaldo insists despite their lower than usual goal tallies, the winner would have been whoever finished above the dominant forces for the past decade in Messi and Ronaldo.

In an interview reported by Marca, he believes the right decision was made to cancel this year’s award, although he feels Lewandowski will feel the most aggrieved by the decision.

He said:

“It was right to decide not to award a Ballon d’Or this year.”

“It’s been a weird season in the European leagues, with many matches played behind closed doors. Some players such as those in France’s Ligue 1 seeing their campaigns ending prematurely.”

“A few players might feel a bit disappointed with the decision and Lewandowski of Bayern Munich is certainly one of them.”

“The Polish striker was magnificent as Bayern won their eighth consecutive Bundesliga title and there is still the Champions League to come, so he was well placed to fight with Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo for the trophy.”

“For Messi and Ronaldo, it’s a lost chance to win another Ballon d’Or at a time when their careers are approaching their ending.”

“But, it was the right decision to cancel the award this year.”
