Lionel Messi scored his 35th hattrick against Mallorca to reclaim Barcelona’s lead in La Liga.

Scoreline: Barcelona 5-2 Mallorca
Goalscorers: Griezmann, Messi (x3), Suarez | Budimir (x2)

Real Madrid took the top spot in La Liga table with their earlier victory against Espanyol. Now, it was Barcelona’s chance to clinch back their position.

Before the match started, Lionel Messi flaunted his sixth Ballon d’Or in front of the Camp Nou. The 32-year old beat Virgil van Dijk and Cristiano Ronaldo in Paris last week to add another record in the history books.

It did not take very long for the champions to take the lead. Surprisingly, or rather unsurprisingly for him, Marc Andre ter Stegen quickly starts Barcelona’s counter after Mallorca’s corner. Griezmann reached the end of it and slotted past Reina to kickstart the match.

Ten minutes later, Messi showed why he was the worthy recipient of the Ballon d’Or. The Argentine’s shot from 25 yards went curling past the Mallorca keeper.

The visitors also replied to Barca’s attack with a goal in the 35th minute. Ante Budimir’s shot deflected off Lenglet and into the Barca net.

Within a space of two minutes, Barcelona scored twice through Messi and Suarez. Messi, like his first goal, sends the ball curling behind Reina. Suarez meanwhile produces a world-class goal with a superb backheel.

Lionel Messi paired up with Suarez later to add another to complete his wonderful hattrick. It was Messi’s 35th career hattrick as he now overtakes Cristiano Ronaldo in yet another aspect of the game.
