Barcelona manager Ernesto Valverde says that they were honoured to have been part of the Nelson Mandela Centenary Celebrations as they defeated PSL Champions Mamelodi Sundowns 3-1
The Spanish giants took the lead in the fourth minute of the match after a defensive error from Soumahoro Bangaly enabled Ousmane Dembele to open the scoring.
Luis Suarez then doubled their advantage with Andres Gomes adding a third in the second-half.
Sibusiso Vilakazi pulled one back for the hosts at the FNB Stadium in Johannesburg on Wednesday evening.
“I liked our opponents a lot because of their enthusiasm, it was a very nice match and the atmosphere was fantastic. For us, it’s an honour that we’ve been invited for such a celebration. We enjoyed it and wanted to win for the fans that follow us from so far away,” said Valverde, as stated on the club website.
“It’s always a pleasure to be with them and it has been a great learning experience.”
Goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen thanked the South African fans for the support they provided them during their stay.
“It has been a great experience for us and we are pleased to have won in front of the South African fans. We really liked the atmosphere and I can only say ‘Thank you for the support.’ We hope to return soon” he said.
