Barcelona player ratings versus Athletic Bilbao

Athletic Bilbao have made an excellent start to their new campaign following a 1-0 win over Barcelona at San Mames.

Barcelona did not expect to lose out to Athletic Bilbao on the opening day of the season. The Basque giants had veteran striker, Aritz Aduriz to thank for a stunning late goal. The Basque native is going to retire at the end of the season and has made a dream start to his last season as a professional player.

Here we take a look at the player ratings from a game that Barcelona dominated throughout the 90 minutes.

Marc-Andre ter Stegen (7)

The German shot-stopper was constantly alert for Barcelona and made two saves from Inaki Williams’ strikes. However, you cannot blame him for not being able to do much about the wonder goal scored by Adruiz.

Nelson Semedo (4)

The Portuguese full back tried everything in his power to link up with Ousmane Dembele but couldn’t really do much in defense, including a failed attempt to stop Aduriz from scoring late on.

Gerard Pique (6)

The Spaniard was booked for a bad foul on Raul Garcia but was otherwise pretty solid throughout the game.

Clement Lenglet (6)

It was an uninspiring yet professional performance by the Barcelona man who did well to contain the Bilbao attacking unit with minimal fuss.

Jordi Alba (4)

A shocker of a night for the Spaniard who just didn’t know what to do! Poor decision making combined with inability to adapt to the game really hurt Barcelona as most of the attacks came from his side.

Frenkie de Jong (6)

Barcelona have paid a lot of money for the young Dutchman and de Jong didn’t disappoint. While most of his teammates were struggling to add any creativity to their overall gameplay, de Jong was trying his best to lead from the front even when he didn’t have the possession of the ball.

Thomas Delaney, Borussia Dortmund

“I’m not Messi!” Dortmund’s Delaney downplays comparisons

Thomas Delaney has cooled talk comparing him to Barcelona star Lionel Messi after impressing in Borussia Dortmund's 4-0 thrashing of Bayer Leverkusen.

Sergi Roberto (5)

The youngster has taken to his new role without any problem but on the opening day of the season, he wasn’t his usual sprightly self. #

Carlos Alena (6)

A real talent if given time, Alena is going to become a huge star for Barcelona. The youngster kept asking for the ball and formed a good partnership with Griezmann. However, he was taken off at half time.

Ousmane Demebele (3)

It was a truly negative performance by the Barcelona winger who contributed nothing to the cause. While his talent cannot be doubted, Dembele struggles to understand the club’s footballing philosophy and should be sold or loaned out.

Luis Suarez (5)

The veteran striker hit the post for Barcelona and did well to take the initiative. However, once he got injured, Barcelona lacked that spark in the final third.

Antoine Griezmann (4)

One cannot blame the Frenchman for his efforts but in all honesty, the club’s new signing needs time to adjust himself to his new surroundings.

Substitutes

Ivan Rakitic (6)

The Croatian partnered well with de Jong when brought on and should be starting games.

Rafinha Alcantara (6)

The youngster hit the bar and did well in the second half.
