Josep Maria Bartomeu has criticized the usage of VAR in La Liga suggesting the system tends to make decisions in the favor of Real Madrid.

Real Madrid and FC Barcelona both managed to grab all three points in matchday 34 in La Liga at the weekend.

The table-toppers strengthened their lead with a marginal 1-0 win against Athletic club while the second-placed team continued to apply pressure after a 4-1 thrashing of Villarreal.

Both the teams had a controversial moment involving the VAR in their respective matches, although only one benefited from it.

Real Madrid were awarded a spot-kick, which eventually helped them get the winning goal, when Marcelo went down after an opponent stepped on his foot. However, a similar incident took place at the opposite end of the pitch moments later, but the referee waved away.

Josep Maria Bartomeu has criticized the video technology saying it is biased towards one team.

“I saw the game in Bilbao, another win for [Real] Madrid,” Bartomeu told, according to ESPN.

“Since the league restarted, it’s [the VAR] not been very fair and that’s having an effect on results. And it seems it always favors the same [team]. There have been many games when VAR has favored the same [team], and many teams have been disadvantaged as a result.

“We spoke with the [Royal Spanish Football Federation] about it in the past. VAR should help referees but in the images everyone has seen in recent weeks it’s not been fair.”
