Lionel Messi plans to retire at Barcelona and will most certainly sign a contract extension with the club, insists Josep Maria Bartomeu.

FC Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi’s future has been a subject of intense debate in recent times.

Reports earlier surfaced suggesting that Messi was unhappy with the state of affairs at Barca. Moreover, it was claimed he has decided against renewing his contract and will walk through the exit door after his current contract runs down in 2021.

The 33-year old himself stirred the pot when he called his side ‘weak’ and ‘inconsistent’ following losing out the 2019/20 La Liga title to Real Madrid. Speaking after their 2-1 loss to Osasuna on matchday 37, he also called for a change of scenario at Camp Nou.

However, president Josep Maria Bartomeu has ‘no doubts’ that the Argentine will commit to a new deal with the club.

“Messi has said it many times. He has said that he will retire at Barcelona, at the club of his life,” Bartomeu said, as Marca reports.

“I have no doubt that Messi will play much further than 2021, which is when his contract ends.”
