Josep Bartomeu wants Lionel Messi to sign another contract but is preparing for the future without him.
Barcelona president Josep Bartomeu has admitted that he wants his star player Lione Messi to continue playing for the club. Bartomeu is confident that the Argentine, when he does, will hang his boot at the Camp Nou.
Lionel Messi has been playing for Barcelona since he was 15 years old. After spending more than 15 years at the club, the talks of the 32-year old’s retirement is looming large. But Josep Maria Bartomeu feels Messi’s retirement is still a long way to go.
“I would like Messi to sign one more contract [extension],” Bartomeu said as per Marca.
“He still has a long way to go [before retiring]. He has no problem with staying at Barcelona. I have no doubt that he will play here until he retires. He said that we’ll talk when the seasons go by. It’ll be over when he wants to.
“For his quality and for being a reference [for Barcelona], I hope I can get Messi to sign a new contract. Messi, who is 32 years old, still has a long way to go.
“We also have the young talents that are coming from La Masia. We have to prepare for the future with younger players.
“The day that Messi stops playing, the game will be different.”
