Lothar Matthaus says Bayern Munich are clear favorites to beat Chelsea and proceed onto the next round of the Champions League.

Former Bayern Munich midfielder Lothar Matthaus feels Chelsea have lost their shine and are no longer the dominant force they used to be in the past.

Chelsea tightened their grip on the fourth place after a 2-1 victory over Tottenham last time out. But with a massive 32-point gap from Liverpool, the Blues have no hope of tasting Premier League glory this season.

Bayern Munich, on the other hand, lead the Bundesliga title race with 49 points. As it stands, they are on their way to win a seventh consecutive league trophy.

Up next, Chelsea play against Bayern Munich in the Champions League Round of 16.

And speaking to German publication AZ, Bayern legend Lothar Matthaus says his former side have a clear advantage over Frank Lampard’s men.

“Bayern is the clear favorite,” Matthaus said.

“This is no longer the big Chelsea from the past with players like Michael Ballack, John Terry, Frank Lampard, and Didier Drogba. Therefore, I assume that Bayern will reach the next round with two good performances.

“In terms of quality, Bayern is well ahead of Chelsea. Overall, the team no longer has the shine of earlier days.”
