Bayern Munich were warned over the problems that will occur should they sign the trouble-maker Ousmane Dembele from Barcelona by Lothar Matthaus.
Just two years upon completing a stunning €125m transfer from Borussia Dortmund, Dembele’s Barcelona career is seemingly under threat.
Instead of delivering on a regular basis, Dembele’s time at Camp Nou has instead been dogged by injury and disciplinary problems. More recently, Spanish media claimed Barcelona have given him one last warning over his behaviour or else they will sell him.
Now, it appears they could end up being true to their word as Antoine Griezmann’s €120m move from Atletico Madrid nears completion. On the other hand, Neymar is attempting to seal an incredible return from Paris Saint-Germain this summer.
Dembele’s spot in the line-up will, therefore, be under some serious threat. Although there is a possibility Barcelona will sell him to recoup some of the funds used to sign Griezmann and Neymar.
So, Bayern manager Niko Kovac announced that they are indeed interested in signing Dembele. With no more Franck Ribery or Arjen Robben, the 22-year-old would be guaranteed of a spot down the flanks.
But Matthaus reckons taking the France international over to the Allianz Arena is a bad call considering his history.
Aside from his troubles at Barcelona, Dembele caused quite the stir when he went on strike to force Dortmund into allowing him to join the Blaugrana in 2017.
“When I think about the scandals that Dembele caused at Borussia Dortmund and at Barcelona, I see no reason to believe that he would behave differently at Bayern,” the Bavarian legend told Bild.
“Uli Hoeness [Bayern’s President] had a clear position against Dembele’s strike at Dortmund, and if Bayern pick the player up, they would have a credibility problem.”
Dembele has managed 18 goals and 17 assists in 65 appearances in all competitions for Barcelona.
The World Cup winner has a market value of €100m and is under contract at Catalonia until June 2022.
