As Bayern Munich prepare to face Barcelona in the Champions League, the battle will be Robert Lewandowski versus Lionel Messi.
Two of European footballs sleeping giants in terms of recent tournament victories. The pair have won the famous trophy five times each.
The last time Bayern lifted “Old Big Ears” was back in the 2012/13 season as part of Jupp Heynckes’ treble-winning side.
Likewise, it has been a few years since Barcelona lifted the converted trophy too. They also last won it as part of treble achieving season, with Luis Enrique at the helm.
This is not where the similarities end. Both clubs are on their second mangers of the campaign. With Hansi Flick replacing Niko Kovac at Bayern, while Quique Setien came in for the ousted Ernesto Valverde.
Other than that the teams have been oceans apart this season. In terms of form, the two could not be more different.
Bayern is in the form of their lives and is on track to make it another treble if Hansi Flick can navigate his sides way through three more games.
Barcelona on the other hand has finished the domestic campaign empty-handed and the Champions League represents their last chance of any silverware in the 2019/20 season.
The game will be a hard-fought affair, and form will play little part in such a battle, especially when there are two goal-scoring machines on the field.
In fact, the match may boil down to who can contain the other sides talisman.
Bayern comes in with goal machine Lewandowski, while Barca is led by one the greatest of all time Messi.
The pairs stats make for interesting reading, and the Polish international’s season in the Bundesliga has him out front on paper. But who would bet against Lione Messi putting on a master class and leading Barcelona to the promised land?
What do you think?
