Former Real Madrid boss Rafael Benitez insists that talk of his technical coaching advice, especially free-kicks to Cristiano Ronaldo are lies.
Rafa Benitez had an ill-fated short spell at the helm of Real Madrid.
The former Liverpool boss was drafted in after Carlo Ancelotti’s tenure ended. However, after only lasted six months as the head coach of Los Blancos he was fired.
It was widely rumored that Benitez struggled in his relationship with the top stars of the team. Even that tried to give technical advice to the number one star Ronaldo.
Benitez admits he informed him he had studied his free-kicks in depth.
But in an interview with Marca, the Spanish tactician denies telling him how to take a free-kick.
“That’s a lie. At no time did I tell him how he had to take them.”
“The only conversation I had with Cristiano about free-kicks was in Australia, during pre-season.”
” I told him we had analyzed, together with my goalkeeper coach, the free-kicks he took when he was at Manchester United.”
“The trajectory of the ball in relation to the position of the wall.”
“Our idea then, as Liverpool coaches, was to try to counter their [United’s] free-kicks.”
“But that’s it. At no time, as coach of Madrid, did I tell CR7 how free-kicks should be taken.”
So here are a few clips of some of his best free-kicks just to remind us and Rafa!
