Darren Bent shared the dressing room with Benoit Assou-Ekotto at Tottenham and remembers him hating his professional career.
Gareth Bale has caught a lot of flak for his preference for golf. The Welshman rates football as behind golf, despite playing for the biggest football club in the world.
The Welshman is not an anomaly as far as footballers are concerned. Darren Bent spent time with Bale at the White Hart Lane and remembers other players having a similar mindset.
Bent remembers Benoit Assou-Ekotto with having a worse attitude to the beautiful game. However, he admits that when the time came, he was absolutely unbelievable on the pitch.
“Benoit Assou-Ekotto – remember him at Spurs? He hated football!” Bent told TalkSPORT.
“He hated training, he hated everything. We’d turn up on a Saturday and he was really, really good.
“He was a very, very good player, but he couldn’t stand football.
“Maybe that’s why he was so good because he didn’t take it too seriously.
“But honestly, he was one of those players who couldn’t wait to get off the training ground quickly enough.”
Assou-Ekotto spent six years with Tottenham, making 202 appearances. He shared the dressing room with Bale and might have rubbed on his disregard for the game on him.
Tottenham was an interesting place to be in the later 2000s. There was a certain Kevin-Prince Boateng at the club in those days as well. Despite featuring rarely, he used to taunt the manager for his limited appearances.
