Karim Benzema opted for his dream move to Real Madrid and rejected Manchester United when he left Lyon.
In the summer of 2009, then French international Karim Benzema was the most sought after striker in Europe.
The battle for his signature was a two-horse race between Manchester United and Real Madrid.
In an interview reported by Marca, Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas reveals the situation when Benzema left Lyon.
Even though United was willing to pay more, but the player was desperate to go to Real.
“When Karim left Lyon, we had two offers: one from Manchester United and one from Real Madrid.”
“Karim came to see me, that’s when the relationships in which there is trust are demonstrated, and he told me: ‘My dream is to play at Real Madrid.”
“In the end, he went to Real Madrid for an amount less than we had from Manchester United.”
As the player enters the twilight of his career, he has rediscovered the kind of form that made him so revered in his younger days.
Benzema has probably benefitted the most from Ronaldo’s departure to Juventus. He is Zinedine Zidane’s leading marksman this season.
It will be interesting to see if Real do eventually let Benzema go to repay the favor Aulas did for them ten years ago.
