Josep Maria Bartomeu has bizarrely revealed the break clause in Quique Setien’s contract in the same breath as insisting Xavi will one day manage the club.
It’s only been 48 hours since unveiling Quique Setien as the new manager of Barcelona.
Yet club president Bartomeu is talking about break clauses and another candidate.
It came as shock to many that Setien was lined up so quickly as the man to replace Ernesto Valverde.
Not everyone is convinced he has the credentials for the job and if the relationship will last too long.
It appears that the club’s president is not too sure either after talking about break clauses and Xavi as future manager all in the same breath.
Speaking Sport, he reveals a standard election break clause only a year into Setien’s contract and that he guarantees Xavi will one day take the job himself.
“The door is open to many coaches, but now we have a manager, Quique Setien.”
“He’s signed for two-and-a-half years and I’ve explained the break clause in 2021 due to elections.”
“If a new president wants to change the manager, they can.”
“But, clearly, Xavi will be the coach of Barça one day, I have no doubt.”
“He is very capable, he’s a person that perfectly understands our football, he’s hugely keen to do it and one day he will.”
Those certainly are not the words of someone filled with confidence that his new man can get the job done.
