Italy failed to secure a spot in the last World Cup in Russia and Leonardo Bonucci admitted that this huge failure will always hunt him as it has left a remarkable sign on his career.
It was a big shock when Italy failed to go through the World Cup qualification play-off and they were eliminated by Sweden – it is not that big shame considering that the Scandinavian country went on to the World Cup quarterfinals but still, Bonucci claimed that he feels ashamed.
The current Juventus centre-back spoke about this experience as he claimed, according to Football Italia:
“It’s a black mark that will never be wiped away from the career of a player.”
“Not going to the World Cup for the Italian Nazionale is truly something catastrophic. That’s the way I experienced it.”
“It would’ve been nice to experience the World Cup with so many young players ready to carry their enthusiasm with them.”
“Now there’s no point going back over it, the important thing is to get back on track the way we have done under Roberto Mancini. We’ve made changes on the pitch, now we hope FIGC President Gabriele Gravina can make a big step forward off the field too.”
