Leonardo Bonuccis wants people to lay off Matthijs De Ligt. He is adamant he will come good and become the best defender in the world.
Since his arrival at Juventus from Ajax this summer, in a big-money move, the young Dutchman has been in for a rough ride from critics.
But Bonucci is confident that in the course of time he will not only get better but become “the best in the world.”
Speaking to Tuttosport, the Italian expressed his support and confidence in his teammate.
“De Ligt’s fate is already decided.”
“He’s struggling like we all did, but he should be left alone.”
“He has the quality to become, if not the best, one of the best defenders in the world.”
Bonucci believes that mistakes and pressure are just part of his natural progression, and it’s only a matter of time before he reaches the top.
“He’s made mistakes like I did in the past and anyone in general: it’s inevitable.”
“Wearing this shirt puts pressure on you and he’s doing it at just 20 years old.”
“Defending zonally after having spent his entire career marking man-to-man.”
“It’s only a matter of time. Even against Lokomotiv Moscow, he had a very good game.”
“He’s only human too. But, with experience, he will become the best defender in the world.”
Given what is expected from the defender, it is easy to forget, De Ligt is only 20 years of age.
