Michel Platini has been arrested by the Anti-Corruption Office of the Judicial Police as part of an investigation related to Qatar 2022.
Michel Platini has been arrested by the Ant-Corruption Official of the Judicial Police. The former UEFA president was taken into custody early this morning as authorities continue investigating breaches that led to Qatar being awarded the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
Back in December 2010, Qatar won the bid to host the event but since then, the awarding has lead to many controversies.
According to reports in the Mirror, the former France legend played a big role in the controversial circumstance surrounding Qatar’s bid to host the event.
Michel Platini was elected as UEFA president back in 2007 but after a series of breaches, was banned by the FIFA Ethics Committee in 2015. Since then, Platini has kept a low profile amid constant controversy regarding his role in dealings with the likes of Sepp Blatter et al.
And former VP, Jack Warner has also said that Qatar bought the World Cup despite the host nation protesting its innocence.
The arrest is further fall from grace for Michel Platini who was touted as FIFA’s next president in 2016 following Sepp Blatter’s ban. Indeed, Platini received £1.35m from FIFA and has already served a major chunk of his four-year ban.
Platini has continued to deny any wrongdoing but his reputation has already been tarnished.
Indeed it is sad to see such a great player being the focus of such a huge controversy. The Qatar 2022 scandal is unlikely to be forgotten soon.
Platini won the Balon d’Or three times in a row following his exploits for France and Juventus. He also represented the likes of Nancy Lorraine and AS Saint-Etienne.
With France, he lifted the European Championships back in 1984.
