Gianluigi Buffon reveals the reason behind his move to PSG and then his return home to Juventus only 12 months later.

The Italian and Juventus legend left the Bianconeri in 2018 after 17 years in Turin.

His affair with the Parisian outfit PSG only lasted one year, before a return to the club he calls home.

At 41 years of age, he is at Juve on a 12 months deal.

In a television interview, reported by Calciomercato.com he reveals his motivation to leave and then dramatically return.

On his decision to leave, he is refreshingly honest about his motivation.

He said:

“I went to PSG because I couldn’t say no to the project and also because of the contract on offer in terms of finance.”

“I also wanted to live a different experience and get out of my comfort zone so that was another reason for me going to France.”

While his reasons for leaving were perhaps selfish, his reasons for returning were quite the opposite.

He added:

“But I decided to return to Juve when one evening in Paris, I was sitting alone.”

“I am thinking I am 41 and I am here alone when my family is back in Italy.”

“So I forced my hand with PSG and when Juve made an offer that seemed right to me.”

“I immediately accepted it.”

His mind is still focused on playing right now, and he has thought no further ahead than that.

He continued:

“Right now I’m in a psycho-physical condition that still makes me feel like an important player. I haven’t considered my future yet.”

Likewise, with the Azzurri, he is happy to take a back seat and let Roberto Mancini’s young project take care of business.

He concluded:

“I believe right now my hypothetical presence in the national team has nothing to do with anything because there is a young project that is bearing fruit.”

“Apart from Donnarumma, which is the diamond that shines the most and that began to shine before the others, there are Meret and Sirigu.”

“Then there are others like Gollini and Cragno. Italy’s last problem is the goalkeeper.”

It remains to be seen how long a legend like Buffon can cpe with being a bit-part player.

It is only a matter of time before he calls time on his illustrious career, and embarks on the next step of his footballing journey.
