Following Real Madrid’s 2-0 defeat to Real Sociedad at home, Club director Emilio Butragueno criticized the referee Munuera Montero after he failed to consult VAR following a penalty incident.

Real Sociedad goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli appeared to have fouled Vinicius Junior in the 18-yard box but Referee Montero decided against consulting the VAR at a time Madrid were 1-0 down.

“We have always been very respectful of referees and supportive of VAR,” Butragueno told Marca.

“But there is something we do not understand in that play.

“I do not know if they consulted VAR, it seemed like they communicated something.

“It was the decisive moment of the game.”

Madrid now trail Barcelona with 10 points.
