Former Real Madrid president Ramon Calderon revealed that Zinedine Zidane left Real Madrid because he wanted to sell Gareth Bale rather than Cristiano Ronaldo.

Zidane left the Spanish giants at the end of last season following a record third consecutive Champions League trophy which raised eyebrows.

And a few weeks down the line Madrid’s star man Ronaldo sealed a shocking €100m transfer to Juventus suggesting the two were close.

“Zidane insisted on keeping Cristiano and selling Bale,” former President Calderon told AS and cited via Football Italia.

Opinion – Eden Hazard won’t stay at Chelsea

As Chelsea suffered defeat to Everton on Sunday, Eden Hazard will have looked around Goodison Park and thought deeply. The Belgian will see results like this as justification to move away from Stamford Bridge.

“Instead, Perez did the opposite. Zidane wanted to have decision-making power when it came to signing and selling players, but his suggestions were ignored, so he decided to move on.

“Zidane made the right decision.”
