Callum Hudson-Odoi has given Chelsea supporters a welcome bit of news by confirming his surgery on a ruptured Achilles tendon was successful.
The 18-year-old winger only saw 41 minutes of action on Monday night after being forced to abandon the pitch.
Chelsea later confirmed that Hudson-Odoi had sustained a ruptured Achilles tendon, which will likely rule him out of the rest of this season. As of right now, no possible return date has been announced by either club or player.
Nevertheless, Hudson-Odoi was able to give fans some good news by announcing his surgery went well.
“Operation was successful. Thank God always and thank you all for your messages and support, the return begins now!!!” Hudson-Odoi wrote on Twitter.
The timing of Hudson-Odoi’s injury setback, however, couldn’t have come at a worse time. He was only just beginning to force his way into Maurizio Sarri’s Chelsea line-up after a long wait.
The teenager has started Chelsea’s last four Premier League games. Thus, he seemed set to play a big role in their top-four chase for the final part of the season.
It marked a big turnaround in fortunes for Hudson-Odoi, who wanted to join Bayern Munich in January due to a lack of opportunities.
But now the England international will have sit on the sidelines and watch his teammates try to finish the campaign strongly.
The Blues are looking to return to the Champions League for next season after failing to qualify last term. They aim to do so by either sealing a top-four finish in the Premier League or winning the Europa League.
As things stand, both remain strong options and so manager Sarri is refusing to prioritise one over the over.
“At the moment we cannot choose,” said the Italian.
“We have to try in the Premier League, we have to try in the Europa League. But we want to win the Europa League because it is a very important competition, not because of going to the Champions League. So we have to try to get top four.”
Chelsea drew 2-2 with Burnley on Monday following goals from N’Golo Kante and Gonzalo Higuain.
