Chelsea comfortably beat Crystal Palace despite the fact Frank Lampard fielded youngest-ever team in the Premier League era.
Youth academy graduate, Tammy Abraham, scored from his only decent chance of the match to give Chelsea the lead. Christian Pulisic added to Abraham’s tenth league goal of the season fifteen minutes from time to double the Blues lead.
The efforts from the young duo were enough to give the Stamford Bridge based outfit their sixth successive Premier League victory, leapfrogging reigning champions Manchester City in the process.
Chelsea head into the international break third in Premier League, level on points with second placed Leicester City.
Six points behind unbeaten Liverpool, Chelsea and Leicester are outsiders for the Premier League title. The chasing pack are on their respective winning runs as they top-four break away from the chasing packs.
Frank Lampard and his team were humbled 4-0 in their opening league match but have not looked back since. While they have continued to leak goals, their offensive prowess has allowed them to chip away at league leaders.
Chelsea’s victory over Crystal Palace confirmed their ability to close out matches. A trait missing in the likes of Arsenal and Manchester United during the current campaign.
Former Blue’s star, Joe Cole, was full of praise for Frank Lampard’s side after their win over Crystal Palace. He hailed how after a lackluster start, Chelsea have gone about their business and are third in the table
“I think they’re quietly chipping away at it,” Cole beamed while talking to BT Sport after the full-time whistle.
“Frank won’t thank us for this, I think he’d like to be even more quiet about it. Going into these two weeks now, he’ll really take stock, reflect on how well Chelsea have started and they’re in amongst it.”
“I don’t think the gaffer will thank me for this because you like to be the quiet ones coming from the outside in the title race. What I’m saying is you can’t find too many faults in this Chelsea team.”
“You play Azpilicueta, you play Reece James, you’re going to get a performance. Pulisic, Mount, Hudson-Odoi, the strength in depth in this Chelsea team now.”
“The biggest thing about this Chelsea team now? They look together, this isn’t a collection of individuals.”
“It was an amazing performance. At half-time, we were a bit worried because Palace defended well but Chelsea stuck to their guns. They moved it either side, eventually, the opening came,” Cole remarked
Lampard’s team are far from the finished product, and are let down by lapses in confidence at the back. Against Palace they kept Zaha silent but a tougher task awaits in their next league match against Manchester City.
The Blues have a point’s margin over Pep Guardiola’s side and will hope the international break does not disrupt their momentum. A win at the Etihad will surely solidify their title ambitions and boost confidence ahead of a congested fixture schedule.
