Due to his most recent surge in level of performance, we need to ask ourselves if Riyad Mahrez could ever win a Ballon d’Or.
When we first laid eyes on Riyad Mahrez at Leicester City, we never imagined he could potentially become Ballon d’Or eligible.
We did see a lot of potential in this player from the very beginning, but that specific accolade is reserved for only a few players.
In fact, only Luka Modric has been able to win the award from Messi and Ronaldo over the last 12 years.
Mahrez already won the PFA Players’ Player of the Year Award when he also won the Premier League with Leicester City.
That season was absolutely outstanding from him, he delivered non-stop impressive performances on a weekly basis.
It was only a matter of time before a major club came after him, but this was something that was bound to happen.
Many rumors linked Mahrez to the Spanish La Liga, with Real Madrid, Barcelona, and Atletico Madrid at the start of every conversation.
There was also a chance he would play for Bayern Munich or Juventus, but his final destination was another English club.
It’s pretty obvious that Leicester City isn’t considered a big club in the country, which made his transfer a lot easier.
But who would spend big on the Algerian winger?
Guardiola laid eyes on Mahrez.
Pep Guardiola has never ceased to look for that ideal player who could take him out of difficult situations.
By this point, even he understands that another Lionel Messi in his squad is practically impossible.
But what if he could find the next best thing?
When the Catalan manager pulled the trigger on Mahrez, he convinced Leicester City to spend nearly €68 million for him.
A player who cost Leicester City a measly €500k when they discovered him at Le Havre.
He arrived at one of the biggest rosters in the world with a low profile and adapting took a long time.
Guardiola’s big plans for him were pretty straight forward from the beginning, he was supposed to take that leading role in due time.
The unique skill that the Algerian star has of cutting from the wing to the middle and dribbling was exactly what Pep wanted.
But the adaptation process took a little longer than expected.
This doesn’t mean that the board of directors wasn’t patient with him, they know Mahrez has the skill that they want.
After more than a season at the club, we can finally see that the patience is paying off.
How can Mahrez win the Ballon d’Or?
This one is the million-dollar question. We have a specific answer for you.
For this to happen, there is a series of events that need to take place first.
For starters, Messi and Ronaldo can’t win the UEFA Champions League and they both have to do terribly during their international competitions this summer.
Once this is out of the way, we can finally start talking about Mahrez’s chances to win the trophy.
Riyad needs to keep leading Manchester City to victories as he’s done it for the last month or so.
But more importantly, he is the man who has to take the Citizens all the way to winning their first-ever UEFA Champions League title.
If this happens, he guarantees himself at least a spot in the podium.
Mahrez’s stats would also have to increase tenfold over the next four months. He also needs to remain consistent.
Also, this player has that mythical Algerian blood that Zinedine Zidane possessed.
This player has that type of elegant game that everybody dies for, all he needs is to set himself up for success.
We are convinced that this player has everything to become the best in the world. But he needs a little more conviction to do so.
