Real Betis player Sergio Canales who recently earned a recall the Spanish national team felt his international career was over.

The former Real Madrid player saw his playing time decimated by a lengthy spell on the sidelines but later made a switch to Betis.

However, his recent form caught the attention of Luis Enrique who decided to give him a fresh start after taking over in the summer of 2018.

“I stopped thinking about the national team,” Canales explained in a press conference at La Ciudad del Futbol via Marca.

“I always had the belief that I could reach the top, but there were moments where I felt that I was no longer a priority.

“I simply had it in my mind to recover and then play well, to build my consistency and play at a high level, but I’ve surpassed all my expectations.”

Spain are set to kick-start their Euro 2020 qualifying campaign with fixtures against Norway and Malta, and the midfielder played down the effect of the team’s failure in Russia.

“From the first moment I arrived, Luis Enrique has transmitted a winning mentality to the group,” he intimated.

“We are going to try and attack our opponents, play on the front foot and win all our matches.

“I’ve noticed a lot of enthusiasm and energy in the dressing room, we’re ready to start this campaign, which is the first step towards the European Championship.”
