Jamie Carragher believes Chelsea could miss out on a top-four spot after their horror defensive show against Liverpool.

Chelsea had some positives to take home after their 5-3 loss at Anfield.

Christian Pulisic put in a good shift from the bench and showed promise in attack. However, their defensive woes at the back cost them precious points once again.

The Blues find themselves in a tricky position ahead of the final round of fixtures. Anything short of a win against Wolves could see them miss out on a top-four finish. Only with the exception that results go their way.

Jamie Carragher is of the opinion that the Chelsea defense cost them once again. One man to shoulder a huge part of the blame is Kepa Arrizabalaga.

“Chelsea will go no further unless they change the goalkeeper,” said the Sky Sports pundit.

Without being reactionary, stats confirm Kepa has indeed been a weak link for Chelsea this term.

Of all sides in the top six, the Spaniard has the worst goals expectancy ratio. He has conceded at least eight more goals than expected.

Moving further, 54 goals conceded by Chelsea this season means only seven sides have conceded more than the Blues in the Premier League. None of those seven sides are in the top half.

Should Wolves go on to score a goal against the Blues on Sunday, it would mark their worst ever defensive record in the Premier League.

The final contrast for Chelsea is their defensive record from last season compared to the current one. Last term, the Blues conceded only 39 goals across all 38 games. Only Liverpool and Manchester City boasted better defensive records. The massive contrast in defensive fortunes shows why Lampard must make it a priority ahead of the summer.

Chelsea has already made a number of attacking signings but the message now is clear. One that hints at a dire need for defensive additions should the club hope to challenge for titles.

Carragher claims the Blues could yet miss out on top four this weekend and we’ll just have to see how that plays out.
